A/B testing, or split testing, is a means of comparing two versions of a web page against each other. For affiliate sites, it is good practice to start with landing pages. The idea is that by running two versions of the page together, and measuring the results, it is possible to continuously improve the performance of the page. Different visitors to the web site will see slightly different versions of the page.
For example, a simple test would be to compare the wording on a call to action button. E.g. "check availability" versus "buy now". By recording the results, and performing a simple statistical significance test, you can make a decision on which, if either button generated the best results. Supposing "buy now" was the clear winner, you could then go on to compare "buy now" with "order now", or try different colour or size buttons.
Of course it shouldn't be restricted to call to action buttons and links, it can be used on any page element, such as colour scheme, nav bar on left vs right, font face, font size. By testing one page element at a time it is possible to gradually optimise your site to make it as efficient as possible.
As an affiliate, you ultimately wish to improve your overall commission. This can be monitored with A/B testing by using 'clickref' data. You may also wish to measure things such as click trough rare, time on page, bounce rate, etc.
